The people are generally very friendly but try cycling on the edge of a Sumatran city in the dark and be prepared. I had phoned snatched from a motorbike pillion rider and a second failed attempt near Palembang. I avoided a mugging by pushing the palm of my hand in the guys face. Don’t stop for anyone at night anywhere. Open sewers are everywhere and be careful of street food. I saw man washing plastic glasses in filthy river for his cold drinks stall.

From there, take the ferry to Dumai and then cycle to Palembang via Pekanbaru and Jambi. Is anyone familiar with this route as I’d be interested to know the condition of road.

Any input much appreciated.
