We were on a very well supported tour with Bubba Baron. Yes 52 days was a long time, you are so right about how one feels when it is over. My new family is scattered all over the USA now. It took me over to weeks to accept the fact that the real world didn’t change and I had to readjust. I am the one who changed, not just the weight lose but the attitude. No body told us what to expect when we returned home. I probably wouldn’t have believed them if they had. I thank my friend for sharing your article.

Being with TDA was our great introduction to long distance cycling.
Once we had signed up for the inaugural Silk Route expedition our lovely Canadian friend, who had persuaded us to sign up for the trip warned us long distance cycling is addictive!!
How true this is. We’ve done so many journeys on our own since.
These trips aren’t holidays, they involve lots of discomfort, hours of cycling through often boring landscapes, cycling along dodgy beaches but we wouldn’t have missed any of our adventures.
Now, though we warn interested cyclists about its addiction before they sign up!!

I crewed for a guy who did solo RAAM (successfully) several years ago. During his winter training (in eastern Canada) he would spend a substantial time in a heated training tent doing base miles – it sounds claustrophobic but it certainly did the job acclimating him to the heat of the western USA.

Sounds like a great trip but we do not have any suggestions for you – sorry.

i am planning on taking my mountain bike on a ride from Portland
Oregon to Globe Arizona. My main concern is that my friend can only do this ride in June along with his son who will be driving the support vehicle.
Not to worried about riding through Oregon, but the bike route is going to put in a lot of heat and desolate desert. Hard to train for the heat living in Oregon.
Any suggestions?

Only seven months after having a repair to my mitral valve (open heart surgery!), I cycled from my home town in the south of England to Fez in Morocco, where I have my other home. On the journey, I lost 4kg in weight despite eating everything in sight! It has to be the best thing I have done so far in my life. I dream of the next adventure!

I am already training for 130 distance solo cycling to a nearby country. South Africa to Lesotho.

glad you liked it…

There are so many benefits! Here are a few we wrote about earlier this year.

…and some more reasons

So what are the benefits of long distance cycling then? My loved one had suffered the consequences of two such rides. What is worse is the relationships between the rider and his family members are adversely affected. Of course, it may not happen to all riders. The personality and character of the rider play a large part too…
Well, let’s hope my loved one returns to reality soon.
