“Faust” is an Ethiopian concept and a living word, a lengthy subject to elaborate upon here. Before Christopher Marlowe, and certainly long before Goethe, the protagonists of the Faust legend, notably Dr. Faust and Mephistopheles, had already appeared together in the title of a tome completed in the 14oos, as commissioned by the philosopher king Zara Yaqob (1399 – 1468). The 15th century king is often confused with another Zara Yaqob, the subject of the above article, who is known from the 17th century.
