My two comments to add:

My husband and I did Tour d’ Afrique in 2019 and probably 100% of the riders ended up preferring the shovel to many of the pithole, toilet alternatives. No wait for a minimum amount of toilets either.

As far as training, you just have to be fit and with enough miles under your belt to make sure your bike is fitted and your butt tough. And that is not too many. No matter how you train, it is never even close to the mileage, grades, and terrain you will jump right into. After two weeks, assuming you did at least some training everyone will be tour tough at the relative levels for their age and abilities.
