The 2022 Pub Ride: An Opportunity To Experience The ‘In-Between’

Sheelagh Day is the Tour Leader Trainee for the 2022 Pub Ride. She sends her initial report from Dublin, Ireland.

The 2022 Pub Ride is off! And we couldn’t be more excited for everything our riders are about to experience. There are plenty of ‘hot spots’ to see across Europe. In fact, Europe is the global leader in tourism with over 700 million tourists arriving each year. Whether it’s the back-packing 20-something hopping from Rome to Venice, the honeymooners landing in Paris, or the history buff nerding out in Athens — there are dozens of popular cities drawing universal attention.

Although these highlights have plenty to offer, traveling by bike offers something completely unique – the opportunity to see and experience what’s ‘in between’. Our Pub Ride is headed for quite a number of European destination cities. The riders will have the opportunity listen to the bagpipes on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, float down the canals in Bruges and stroll through the Red Light District in Amsterdam. But what makes bicycle travel so special is everything the riders will get to pass through on the way.

As these cyclists make their way along the route from Dublin to Copenhagen over the next few weeks, they’ll have experiences that wouldn’t be possible by other means of transportation. They’ll cruise along quiet canals in Northern Ireland, sweep along the rows of windmills in the Netherlands, and surely have more than a few memorable encounters with locals. All of this will happen at the unique speed of a bicycle — fast enough to make progress, but slow enough that one can truly soak it all in.

Plus, let’s not forget about the challenge of cycling and the rewards it brings. Eating fish ‘n’ chips in a London pub is great. But after a long day of riding through the British countryside? That plate is going to be delicious in a whole new way. And when our riders return home they won’t just have enjoyed pints on the road from Ireland to Denmark — they’ll have the accomplishment of cycling over 2,500km to get them there.

We may be biased, but in our humble opinion, one simply cannot achieve the same experience riding in a tour bus, behind the wheel of a car, or even with a backpack. Travelling on a bicycle can get you to some pretty incredible destinations. But it’s never about the destination. It’s always about the journey. And what a journey the 2022 Pub Ride will be!
