I am retired, 61yo and have been riding events for more than 20 years, originally road races here in the Western Cape in South Africa and then migrating to include more MTB which is a bit more of a challenge with technical single-track sections in many events. I have done a number of supported 3-day MTB stage events (including an event that forms part of the shorter global Epic series) and long distance 1-day events and am now looking at buying a 3rd bike, for gravel roads. I want to be able to ride all the old farm roads that criss cross the province and the country, even some organised, self-supporting. There are just so many choices in this cycling paradise. However, I ride with a social ride once a week with friends and they hold themselves back through fear and lack of confidence, although they say they’re not as passionate about cycling as me. Yes, I have my fair share of falls and at our age that’s risky, fortunately I’ve not broken anything, and I wouldn’t want to, but I won’t let fear hold me back. I love the challenge and if it’s too hard I get off and walk. “Don’t limit your challenges. Challenge your limits.” Jerry Dunn, American college basketball coach

I met Henry and his mother Myra in Zambia in the 2009 Tour d’Afrique. I started the tour at age 70 and finished it at 71. At that time I was the oldest rider to ever ride that tour. I don’t know if I still hold the record or not. I was born March 10, 1938!

Do these things while you still can – physically, emotionally, psychologically, and finically

As Mark Twain said …
“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bow lines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in you sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
