for FLAT FIXES, there are a number of “bacon strip” repair kits available to plug holes that don’t seal themselves. For example, Dynaplug has several types of kits. My experience is this type of fix can be considered permanent.

Be careful using CO2 cartridges to refill a tubeless tire. Some sealants are denatured if they are sprayed with the extremely cold CO2. To help protect sealant inside the tire, keep the valve stem side of the wheel higher than the rest of the wheel so most sealant has flowed away from the valve when using the cartridge.

for TIRE MOUNTING, I have had good experience with mounting tubeless tires and “popping the bead” during first inflation by using big bore stem valves. I use Fillmore valves made by Reserve Wheels. I have popped the bead of several brands of tires using only a regular floor pump when using this type of valve.

In reply to Ralph Reilly. If you get a flat, it can be difficult or impossible to re-seat the tire bead of a tubeless tire without an air compressor or CO2 cartrdidge.

I have been touring with tubeless for the last few years with no problems. I have never carried or used CO2 cartridges. Why are they needed?

When running tubeless, you don’t lose weight. You gain it, because you HAVE to take tubes with you anyway in case of a fast flat. No way will you re-snap a tubeless tyre with your mini pump.

Point 3 in fixing tubeless flats. I think that you will have to remove the tubeless valve stem in order to have a hole for the valve stem on the tube. This may be slightly difficult out on the road, depending on how tightly the tubeless valve was installed.

If you can, go for hydraulic discs, they are amazing. Great control while stopping, even during a panic stop…don’t ask.
