New Zealand

I'm a New Zealander, tho originally from the UK,. My wonderful wife of 42 years to date, and I have a terrific daughter. I'm a business journalist for Newsroom.co.nz, I'm an Edmund Hillary Fellow https://www.ehf.org/ and am involved in all sorts of other things. And I cycle a a fair amount...always have...never stopped...since I was a small kid. Some highlights to date include all six Tours of New Zealand so far, a one day ride in 2009 across the South Island of NZ from the Tasman Sea , over our Alps to the Pacific Ocean, for a total of 260km, a north-south end-to end of NZ in 2010...riding 2,200km in 14 days, and in 2022 another NZ end-to-end, Tour Aotearoa, a 3,000km bike packing trip, much of it off tarmac, in 28 days. And years ago, my wife and I spent a leisurely three weeks riding from John O'Groats to Lands End in the UK, taking a slightly roundabout 1,150 mile route. I was born in Birmingham in the UK...and I first visited Beijing as a young business journalist and have been back numerous times since. China's long been a dominant factor in the world I write about. So riding from Birmingham to Beijing is a long-standing ambition. Given Covid's great disruptions, tho, it's a rather round-about route: Almaty to Istanbul in 2023, Istanbul to Birmingham in 2024 and Beijing to Almaty in 2025!

After starting trekking at the age of 50, I have spent some 2 months every year on skis, pulling sledge, carrying rucksack or kayaking. My greatest affections are polar expeditions and long/ultralong treks both alone and in a group. Have been several times trekking in Central Asia, Himalayas etc. Cycling is my latest discovery, but experience is still modest, incl. only Himalayas Lhasa-Kathmandu, Pamirs Dushanbe - Osh and Vietnam Hanoi - Saigon, Trans-Europe, round Finland, round the Baltic Sea.

I'm a nomad based in the Florida Keys. I did the 2020 Tour d'Afrique from Cairo to Arusha (where it was canceled due to Covid-19), and the 2022 Tour D’Afrique from Livingstone, Zambia to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. I’ve become a TDA junkie and am signed up for lots more trips!

I am a fit an healthy 58 year old lady from Australia. I have been a keen cyclist for most of my life using cycling for commuting as well as recreation. Recently I undertook a bike packing adventure solo from Guatemala to Ushuaia - over 12,000km. I did this unsupported and raised $19,000 for the Fight Cancer Foundation. Since returning I have quit full time work so I am officially 'retired' and have writen a book about my adventure called 'When We're Not Afraid'. When I am not working I have been a medical officer managing hospitals and primary health care services. I have four grown children in their early 20s. I am a dog lover.

I am a retired lecturer in Food Science living in Melbourne and have been cycling as an adult for 40+years. I completed Cairo to Cape Town with TdA in 2019 albeit in stages having started back in 2013. I have previously cycled across Canada with Tour du Canada. some years back I rode with two friends from the north to the south of the UK (John O'Groats to Lands End) taking a wandering route and enjoying English and Scottish B&Bs and the odd pub.

I am an almost retired family doctor, working just enough to help pay for this type of grand adventure! I do lots and lots of kayaking and expeditions, but this will be my first big bike tour. One might as well start off with a challenge! Growing up on Canada's balmy wet west coast, I have been bike riding for commuting and exercise most of my life, but I have only done a couple of tours in the past - Ireland and New England. This Covid delay has given me even more time to get some experience on the bike before the trip,

I am from Boulder, CO, USA. I am an ex computer hardware guy. I love bike touring, and mountain biking. Specifically, I mainly do bikepacking, carrying camping gear on my Surly ECR. The longest route I have completed is the American GDMBR, in 2017. I prefer dirt road and trail riding to pavement. I toured Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica in 2019, and The Swiss Alpine Bike 1 route in 2018. I enjoy riding anywhere and everywhere, anytime. I want to see the world, by bicycle!

Hi, I am an Aussie, with three children, three grandchildren, two bikes and love my cycling and Australian Rules. I am semi retired, with little hair where it matters, and like reading, learning about politics, enjoying good food and wine, and have had a very lucky and fortunate life. I live in Bendigo and country life is relaxing, quiet roads to cycle and people seem to have more time for you. I travelled in Europe, Russia, Israel and Central Asia in 2018 (Senior Gap Year) , trying to squeeze in as many adventures as I could before I get too old or my health changes. Travelling is a bug, and whilst I love family and Aussie, the lure of travelling and visiting unusual parts of the world is still strong.

This will be my first tour with TDA and my first supported tour. Previously, I've toured in Australia the UK, Eastern Europe, Iceland, Scandinavia and South East Asia, mostly solo but sometimes with friends. I'm married with 4 kids and 3 grand kids and I'm really looking forward to experiencing the Silk Route. I'm booked in for the first two stages but I'm really hoping to be able to extend this to go all the way to Istanbul ... just depends on work and family commitments.

"This adventure is a true sensory delight: You're cycling through ever changing landscapes, you can smell, hear and see the culture of the country you're in."

“Some of the toughest and most remote riding I have done, but absolutely the most rewarding.”

“All that suffering allows for a level of immersion that other trips can’t offer. When it’s really tough, you go beyond what you believed you could do…Pedal 7,600 miles across Asia, spending over four and a half months on the ancient silk-trade route”
