After riding with TDA one and a half time the Silkroad, the Magical Madagaskar and the Himalaya Tour it's time for the next one to South Korea an Japan. For me Korea and Japan are totally unknown countries and it's time to change that. I am looking forward to meet some old friends again and to find some new ones.

Starting doing my first TDA trip back in 2011 and doing quite some more along the years I am so happy to be back there after a far too long Corona pause. First time cycling with you in Europe is exciting - a bit more comfortable than my third world camping expeditions.. Fits me really well! And about time to learn the more charming stretches of Germany after pendling between Austria (where I live) and Denmark (where I come from) for over 40 years. This will be wonderfull: to meet you all and doing a full supported tour again!

“‘Happiness is only real when shared’: I think this counts for a whole spectrum of experiences and emotions—pain, hardship, excitement, joy, for instance—and explains why sharing an adventure or journey with a group makes it so very real!”

Who would have thought that growing up on a farm and a career in rural healthcare would prepare me for a job like my job at TDA? I always had the desire to travel and even though I thought working here would be too good to actually come true when I sent in my job application, here I am, six tours and 28 countries later. I’ve learned more about the world and myself then I ever expected.

With so many incredible memories—and so much food shared, so many friends made along the way—it will take me years to process everything I’ve experienced courtesy of TDA. Highlights of my travels so far include finishing the North American Epic (NAE) in Mexico City on the Day of the Dead, cycling Central Asia’s Pamir Highway, Abdul’s pilaf in the parking lot, Colombia, pan con chicharron, Patagonia, a massive thunder storm in Zambia, Hami melon, Madagascar, Samarkand, walnut and honey spread on fresh bread and topped with whipped yak cream, eaten in a warm yurt… and the list goes on! It’s amazing to realize that everything I experience with TDA will have an impact on my life long after these adventures are over.

One adventure I don’t expect to have again is the one I had in Mexico, when we discovered Hurricane Patricia was heading right straight at us. Monitoring the storm’s progress through the night—from stage 4 to stage 5—seemed so unreal. By 5:00 a.m., CNN was calling Patricia the strongest hurricane ever measured on planet earth. A few hours later, we loaded all bikes, riders, kit and crew onto an extra van and bus … and took off, tails between our legs, because Patricia was shaping up to be a beast! By nightfall we were safe and sound in the heart of tequila country, and, as Patricia lost most of her fury at landfall, the party at our lodgings ramped up.

There are so many wonderful aspects to working with TDA but key amongst them are travelling with purpose, meeting people from all over—and the food!

How I got to be a cyclist Hi my name is Johannes Hamunyela, well known as “Jo-Joe”en I am 1,62 height,24years of age, it all started off as a joke clearly remember the year of 2008. By then I was 15 years of age. In my grade 8 in the city of Namibian well known as Windhoek. I was always so curious on owning my own bike as I always use to see most of my friends riding not allowing me to share with me simply because I take too long to return. Likely for me my secondary school get sponsored with bikes and the school started working out to those who do good for the school where I got to own one for myself too. So we started bragging on who’s faster than who we would go to the high ways. “the western bypass” to race amongst ourselves until we decided to actually join up for a competition “Race” where I got to win my first Amazing race the NEDBANK CYCLE CHALLENGE 35km under P.A.Y Physically Active Youth so I got to be introduced to P.A.Y which is an after school program where I would always come and do my school work and where we did some different sports activities’ so those of us that loved cycling joined and we get to be registered in races and we made it more fun by competing each other. There it goes the more you win the more you want to keep winning as I grow. So I got to be selected in the national team where I am till now, I got to travel to different countries either with my team or the national team to represent the country. And we would mostly bring back either medals or jersey’s as time passes so do i get to ride different bikes for different teams too. Where by so bikes sometimes I get to be invited alone for races to other countries. Like Japan, South Africa. I as well got to be doing training camps. E.g. the UCI camps which most of the races and places I visited I consider as achievements. I really feel like I have a lot to tell when it comes to my life history. As came from a really struggling family and with me cycling helps me provide a little income to my family. Where I can. It’s one of the reasons why I take cycling serious. I was born and raised by a single mother unemployed. I have 3 three brothers and a sister. I am my mum’s second born of the family. Where my younger brothers love seeing me ride my bike and I wish I could get them their own bikes but it really impossible as cycling in my country is not really recognized that much. So the little price money I get I have to assist my mother. With buying food and pay my little brother pre-primary school. I really feel sad sometimes when I see them look at me. I am rated as one of Namibia’s top cyclist and I am glad and happy, I feel proud of myself.

"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle." I am proud of the fact that I bicycle more miles per year then I ride or idrive a car. I love the freedom of traveling on a bicycle. Traveling by bicycle your only concern is your health, your bicycle, and experiencing the immediate world around you. A long time ago, I had a ten minute conversation on the beach with Steve who had been on a TDA tour through Africa. I didn’t know it then but it planted a thought in my head that would soon change the course of my life.

It seemed that everything I had done before had in some way prepared me for this. A life in hospitality and a few years at sea - from some grand establishments to some very inhospitable vessels and anything in-between.

There were a variety of less stimulating occupations I had explored before I landed at TDA. I think this is what has kept me here for so long, the almost overwhelming stimulation that one gets from daily life on tour, which is miles apart from my quiet country life in South Africa.

That, and the other people. There is always such a variety of people from all walks of life and from all over the world that I would otherwise not have met.

I enjoy the challenge it brings and I look forward to going to the more out of the way locations. I enjoy travel, and I love cycling so am looking forward to combining them both again on this trip. My first TDA trip was Madagascar in 2019, I did the Trans-Caucasus in 2022, then the last two sections of the South America Epic in 2024. I am looking forward to another trip with TDA. The Silk Road has always inspired me, and does daunt me at the same time, but I look forward to experiencing what it has to offer. I have been cycling since I was in school, chasing buses across town to school. Now, at 60, I have stepped up cycling in the last 12 years with weekend rides and endurance rides of 300/500km in 24 hours. My wisdom/body is now telling me that multi-day riding is more fun. More recently, I cycled across the Atlas Mountains in North Africa, Sri Lanka, and TDA Madagascar 2019, then Cairo to Cape Town for an extra dose in 2023. This trip will be exciting and push me to the limits and beyond. TDA trips recharge my batteries for a few years, and this trip is long overdue and will scratch the itch again. Once I've sat down at the end of the day with coffee in hand, I always have a smile on my face as I consider how lucky I am.

Something of a British Canadian mongrel, raised in Toronto and currently awaiting judgement day in the UK's Southwest. I first cut my teeth as a chef in Toronto's fast-paced restaurant scene, specialising in Italian and Mexican cuisine. But really grew in to my own, after I started traveling, seeing drawing connections, conjuring up my own fusions, and getting to grips with real french cuisine in France. In 2018, I completed the Silk Route tour with TDA as the tour chef. and then returned to the region in 2022 on TDA's Trans-Caucuses. Working for TDA is truly a dream come true, as I never stop savouring the opportunity, overland across continent, tasting cuisine, drinking in the sights and sounds, learning languages and laughing with locals. I hope to engaged more openly with my travels by, recording and photographing the outlandish and irregular natural and cultural communities, eventually capitalising on my journalism undergrad.

Hi. My name is Maureen, and I am passionate about bicycle touring and anything to do with bicycles. I had to abort on the Hippie Trail in 2025, but I successfully completed the amazing new Tea Route tour in 2026. and am excited to be exploring more of the middle east and part of China. I have cycled the Orient Express, Canada 150, Madagascar, part of the Hippie Trail, and the Tea Route trips with TDA, and have participated in, or led many bike tours through Canada, the States, France, Italy, New Zealand, and Australia - both supported and self-support, and am hoping to be able to do many more rides on my bucket list while the mind and the body are still willing and able! I'm looking forward to meeting my fellow adventurers on this unique adventure!

Coffee first, then a few written pages, followed by breakfast before starting the day's ride. I am thankful to my dad, who took my training wheels off, pushing me forward with momentum and freedom I've never forgotten. I am grateful to be on yet another riding tour with my partner, Rod, and to enjoy the immersive experience of riding, eating leisurely at the lunch truck, and sitting under a few bamboo trees before peddling to the finish, where a cool, refreshing drink always awaits. Alumni 2011 India, Madagascar 2023. Morocco 2024, Japan 2025 and excited to join TDA and fellow riders in Hanoi for the 2026 Bamboo Road adventure!

Rode the Ruta Maya tour in 2015 and loved it. Was planning on doing the first Magical Madagascar Tour in 2019 but ended up doing the last 2 sections of West Africa en Velo in 2019 which was fantastic and allowed me and my partner to catch up with a number of Ruta Maya riders who had signed up for the tour, and to meet new friends. Covid along with a change in jobs put the brakes on riding the 2021 Magical Madagascar Tour, but we finally got to Madagascar in 2023, which wildly exceeded expectations.

It's a sweltering day riding through rural Uzbekistan. I'm riding sweep, when a rider stops in a lazy town square to adjust something on his bike. Within seconds of stopping, there are a dozen local folks offering us fruits, tea, shade and trying to communicate with us. It was just an example of the immense generosity and community minded nature of so many folks on the Silk Route. The simple act of nurturing from these strangers struck a chord with me. It's one of my favorite moments on a TDA tour; the simple reminder that most people are kind and that makes the world smaller in the best way possible. Experiences like those remind me why I started guiding, and why tour leading for TDA is so special; as a tour leader you have this opportunity to create an environment that breeds curiosity, kindness and allows riders to relax into the riding, and the culture.

I started guiding backpacking and sea kayaking when I was 17 as a summer job near my hometown in Newfoundland, Canada. I found it amazing that I had the opportunity to share wilderness and culture with folks from all over the world, and that sentiment has never really left me. I worked as a guide and treeplanter throughout university where I obtained a degree in Environmental Science. Post-grad, I decided a traditional science job wasn't for me, and went down the long certification process of becoming a Canadian Ski Guide. These days when I'm not on a TDA tour, I work as a ski guide for helicopter and snow-cat skiing, near where I live in Northern British Columbia. Somewhere in there I squeezed in lots of travel, some highlights being: living and working in Ukraine as part of an international development program, cycling across South America, studying and mountaineering in Alaska!

My biggest advice for a TDA participant is to let go! Really settle into the experience, and the routine. Most people's day to day lives exist at a pace much more hectic than riding your bike all day, this is your opportunity to totally settle in!

Hello All, I am fairly new to road cycling. I just started my fourth year and I can’t imagine traveling without a bike! My first TDA trip was the Trans Europa in 2020. Now I'm hooked, I love the TDA style of cycling. What I love most about traveling with my bicycle and TDA is that I meet locals who live off the beaten path in small villages. I also love tennis and hiking. My husband and I each brought two grown children from previous marriages, and we now have nine grandchildren. Although I spend a considerable amount of time traveling, I live in Banff, Canada, during the summer months and Arizona during the winter. I consider Arizona my home. My husband Wim and I look forward to meeting everyone! Cheers ~ Stacey

Inspired by a friend of ours who joined the TDA tour Cairo/Capetown 2 years ago Jacob and I decided to join the magical Madagascar tour. We will do the first leg. Our wifes will join us when we arrive in Tana and we will travel around Madagascar with them for another 2,5 weeks. “I liked it so much, I booked another trip on week 5 of 6, even though I was bathing in a muddy stream after a long days ride.”

“I found this tour exceeded my expectations of both my own capabilities and what a bike tour would be like. For my first tour and really for my first time ever doing any distance cycling. I had a blast and only positive experiences!”

“The guidance of the tour was perfect. The staff gave all what was possible to support the riders. I enjoyed the mixture of cycling and visiting the natural-sites of Madagascar. The two-days boat trip on the river was a highlight for me.”
