The Potential of Red Mist Descending on Cyclists

bitePoor Louis Suarez! The Red Mist descended upon him all of a sudden, without any warning and the Uruguayan soccer star had more fame than he could deal with. His action though, did make a few people happy. A Norwegian soccer fan bet on Suarez biting someone at the Mondial otherwise known as Football’s  World Cup in Brazil, taking some ludicrous odds on the bet and with the money he won, he can now take a small vacation – I hope on the bike. Perhaps one of our expeditions that feature a race component – Tour d’Afrique, South American Epic or La Ruta Maya. Why on a bike you ask?

Interestingly enough according to Urban Dictionary under the definition of Red Mist it states:

A feeling of extreme competitiveness or anger that temporarily clouds one’s judgment. For example, When that guy cut me off, the red mist washed over and all I could think about was catching him. Put a bunch of buddies on fast bikes and just watch the red mist rise…

Jorg, Paul spencer and Paul WolfeIf you ever partake on any long distance cycling tour you will be able to see Red Mist demonstrated on a regular basis and in close proximity, with often the unhappy recipients being the staff.  Unlike in football (soccer), however, there are no referees to throw the “Mist-ifieds” out of the game or slow-motion replays that can be submitted to higher authorities for further action.

With the tremendous popularity of the GoPro camera I suspect that not only cycling but many sports will soon benefit from filming the Red Mist in action and YouTube will be even more popular than now.

This, of course, is unfortunate because considering how much exposure for the sport of Football one angry (or was it hungry) soccer player created, surely cycling could benefit as well.  There is hope though. With the tremendous popularity of the GoPro camera I suspect that not only cycling but many sports will soon benefit from filming the Red Mist in action and YouTube will be even more popular than now. Personally I can’t wait.

Just imagine competitive skydivers being enveloped by the Red Mist and what they might do? Or a curling star hitting their opponent with a broom at the next winter Olympics? What will happen when weight lifters and synchronized swimmers get in on the act ?

The potential to go viral is limitless!!! What fun!
