Day 18 – Kelheim to Straubing was a god riding day – some along the river and some out in the country. We had more pavement today then the previous few days, the weather was warmer and although it was cloudy most of the time it did not rain.
We road as a group – Chuck, Randy, Sheila, Joy, Walter, Lincoln and me. Averaged 20K per hour which has been about normal for these cyclepath days with variable surfaces, many turns and hidden signs.
We had a good stop in Regensburg to see the big twin-spired church there. We did see the church but first as we rode into the old town we rounded a corner and there was a gelato stand with 32 flavors. The guy even spoke German with an Italian accent. It was after 10, we had put in 25 km so we had to stop. I had blueberry, chile chocolate and green apple but had to share a lot of it fortunately. The church was impressive, too.
We had another great lunch by Jenny beside the Danube – egg salad or baloney and cheese with good dark bread, veggies and fruits. Some headwind today but not a problem as the road was usually slightly downhill and smooth.
We reached our campsite at 2 and did the usual setup and the sun started to come out. Straubing holds the biggest beer festival in the world from August 12 to 22 so there were a lot of cyclists, not to mentiuon cars, heading there. After setup we went down to check it out and the town.
Walked around the town but ate at the festival and this is what I had – Schweinkrustenbraten mit Reiberknodel und sauerfraut 7.90. No translation needed this time – roast pork, a semolina and/or potato dumpling with gravy and sauerkraut – real good.
