The Beginning

An early start and a cold morning as the tour group made their way from the hotel up to the start line at the top of the pyramids; the bikes snaked their way through the line of camels and donkeys heading out to catch the tourists visiting the pyramids. After a brief stop for warm drinks, snacks and photos the convoy started heading out of Cairo (looked after by our police escorts throughout the city) where the race began on the outskirts of the city. The ride was on tarmac, relatively flat and very fast as the landscape changed from the city buildings to open, rocky desert landscape. Our first group arrived at the Desert Camp in a blistering pace with the final rider coming in just before the sun set marking the end of day 1. Where else would we rather be?
