“Nothing Bad Ever Happens in Bike Heaven”

Oh, how much do we enjoy some cool weather? Every rider on the 2007 tour would agree that the cooler temperatures today made for some bike heaven and “nothing bad ever happens in bike heaven.” Riders enjoyed asphalt, speed and some very nice downhills today on the way to the small town of Nanyuki and the Sportmans Arms Hotel which is our camp tonight, equipped with grass to camp on and, luxury of luxuries in our world, a swimming pool! The route took us out of the Rangelands Hotel on the outskirts of Isiolo towards Mt Kenya, in full view until lunch. We climbed up and up for most of the morning (an elevation gain in excess of 1000m). Afterwards the road was undulating ups and downs for the rest of the way. What made the climbing easier were the amazing views…Mt Kenya, rolling hills covered with sunflowers and corn crops, thatched cottages and super friendly Kenyans who smiled and waved and told you “not much further”. (I’m sure they think we are crazy). Most riders were in camp very early today and able to rest and recharge the batteries for the next two days as we head to Nairobi and our upcoming rest day. We have also been joined by our film crew, Ed and Jacq, as well as their shiny (not for long) new 4WD that has been driven up from South Africa by Geoff and John from Toyota. These guys headed back along our dusty, bumpy dirt road route today (towards Marsabit) and could only shake their heads in disbelief that we managed to ride bikes along that road. Aaaah, as the toga party kicks off one can only enjoy feeling rested, clean, fresh and ready for a non-race day tomorrow.
