Grand Canyon

Tour d’Afrique Ltd and our North American Epic clients checked another must see wonder of the world on a bike off our bucket lists today when we arrived at the Grand Canyon. While words like “unbelievable” and “I’m speechless” echoed among the group, fortunately noone was tempted to spin down the 4600 foot drop from the South Rim to the Colorado River below …

The Grand Canyon is the most famous of the American Southwest geological freak shows, attracting 5 million tourists and thousand of cyclists annually. The bottom of its many layers, the Vishnu Schist, is so ancient that it does not contain any fossils, dating back 2 billion years to the Precambrian era, when life on earth had barely begun. Tomorrow we will be treated to more breathtaking canyon view points as we spin along Highway 64 before descending 3000 feet to the Painted Desert and the Navajo Trading Post of Cameron. From there it’s a two day ride to another Dreamscape – Monument Valley. Don’t you wish you were with us? Never fear, there is lots of time to sign up for  the next North American Epic!
