The Mars Odyssey

It was not very long ago when I got very excited about planning my Moon Odyssey for my 80th birthday. However things are evolving very quickly and I am now developing some even more exciting plans.

it dawned on me that I should contact Mr. Lansdorp and suggest that I and some others who are ready to take a leap, apply to be part of the mission to help and explore Mars

I recently read in the New York Times, of all places, an article “Off to Mars, by Way of Reality TV” about a Dutch engineer and entrepreneur  Mr. Lansdorp, who plans to sent a flyby mission to Mars by 2018. By 2023 he plans to send a mission of four to establish a colony. He proposes to finance this by – guess what – a reality TV show. The mission will be paid for by us watching it. By the way, he is not the only one planning a mission. The billionaire owner of Tesla Motors and founder of Space X Elon Musk as well as the the ever-reaching-for-the-sky businessman, Richard Branson, both have plans of their own.

Frankly maybe if I had a billion or two I would plan my own mission. But I am digressing. So what is evolving? Looking at the surface of Mars, which has a lot of resemblance to the terrains the riders on Tour d’Afrique tours, it dawned on me that I should contact Mr. Lansdorp and suggest that I and some others who are ready to take a leap, apply to be part of the mission to help and explore Mars.

After all, as one journalist wrote after partaking in our tours, they are “part expedition, part social experiment, part madness“, I would think we would be excellent material for a reality TV show. And besides Mr. Lansdorp would save a lot of money on unnecessary training.

Now I am sure that you, the reader, who has not been on our tours, think that this is, as our Dear Mayor Ford of Toronto would put it, “nuts, just nuts”. But take a look at the pictures above and below and you tell us which are from Mars and which are from TdA tours…

Lunar Lanscape

The Nubian Desert, and a lunar landscape – which is which?
