Meet the 2015 Tour d’Afrique Race Director – Andreas Pakenham

Hello TDA riders and would-be TDA riders! I’m Andreas, and I’m along on this tour as a Race Director, and secondary bike mechanic. It’s not my first time on tour with the company, but it is my first time to Africa. Tour d’ Afrique was the original tour that sparked my interest in being a part of expedition bicycle tours, and got me signed up on the 2013 North American Epic. I’d love to tell you that I’ve been carefully planning my gear, medications, and studying up on languages, but I can’t. It was less than two weeks ago I was finishing up as Tour Director on the Trans Oceania in Australia. Now, two continents later, I’m waiting to board my flight to Cairo. Only now is it starting to sink in. I’m excited. I’m very, very excited!

I started “seriously” racing cross country mountain bikes at 10, and although the time I devote to competition dropped since, I’m looking forward to being a part of the timing and rule keeping on the 2015 TDA. Here’s hoping we can all take a break now and then from racing around, and really see some of what Africa has to offer. Despite the stories of stones, lack of privacy, and sickness, Ethiopia is the country I’m most excited to experience. Bring on some Ethiopian Jazz and Injera!

Oh, and in the “real” world, I live on a boat in Victoria BC! Let’s hope it’s still floating in May when this is all over…
