Cycling The St. Lawrence
We’ve only been cycling for three days, but already we see the impact of rivers running through the course of this tour. We left Quebec via ferry on a beautiful sunny morning, looking back at the chateau over-looking the St. Lawrence River. After the crossing, we started off on Day 1. Part-way down the directions for the morning, there was a line that read something like: “You’ll come to a bike path that will take you under the bridge – make sure you take the bike path – Don’t cross the St. Lawrence again!” Unfortunately, there was a group that missed that line and… crossed the St. Lawrence again! And then had to come back. So there were three major river crossings on Day 1 for a few people.
We’ve been lucky with the weather in general, with the days being sunny and dry for the most part, and only really getting rain over night. That said, the rain at night has been HARD. After a rather wet night camping, Day 2 saw us crossing a number of smaller swollen rivers and flooded fields. The Route Verte remained drained and smooth though, and we had another good day cycling.
Day 3 saw us cross the St. Lawrence again – but this time on purpose. The weather stayed brilliant and the riders were met with a stunningly beautiful view of the city and the river coming into Montreal.
We’ve refreshed ourselves on the rest day in Montreal, toured the city, eaten some amazing food, and dried out all our camping gear. Tomorrow we head off to cross the St. Lawrence again, for (hopefully) the last time on this trip.
