The Final Act and a New Stage: Reflections from the Sydney Harbour

We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.
– Joseph Campbell

A few days ago, we cycled into Sydney, marking not just the completion of an epic chapter on the Trans-Oceania Cycling Tour but also the beginning of something new. Standing beneath the Sydney Opera House and gazing across at the Harbour Bridge, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of these iconic landmarks as metaphors for our group of accomplished cyclists. The Opera House, with its sweeping sails, felt like a symbol of closure — a crescendo marking the end of our 3,500km Australian adventure. The Harbour Bridge, stretching across the busy waters, called us toward a chapter yet to be written.

For me, Sydney is not just another milestone on the map, it’s a deeply personal one. My first visit here in 2018 was the prologue to my creative journey as a photographer. Back then I arrived as an intern, camera in hand, capturing the world around me for the first time as a hobbyist. Returning now as a filmmaker, Sydney had become a stage for reflection; a city where I could look back and see just how far I’ve come since those early, uncertain days.

Sydney, 2018

In many ways, the Opera House mirrors the closing of this chapter in the Trans-Oceania tour as well. Reaching this city after months of cycling across Australia feels like an artistic triumph – a blend of sweat, grit, and moments of quiet curiosity. It’s crazy to think that just 46 days ago we left Adelaide, cycling our way through wine country, curious about the journeys that lay ahead. We’ve experienced so much since then – a blend of unique wildlife entangled within rugged, diverse landscapes.

I’ll never forget the ferocity of the Southern Ocean, the coo of a Magpie, or the curiosity in a Kangaroo’s stare. These are the details I found myself reflecting upon standing beneath the Opera House’s architectural beauty, a reminder that every journey deserves a fitting finale. It was the perfect place to pause, look back at the road behind us, and honour the challenges and growth that brought us here.

For Josiah Skeats, our Assistant Tour Leader, this moment carries even greater significance. In 2018, Sydney marked the conclusion of his three-year global cycling journey. That solo ride, spanning three continents and 40,000 kilometres, was a life-changing act of courage and endurance. Returning to Sydney with this group has brought his journey full circle, blending past and present in a way only this city can.

Reaching Sydney has reminded me that life, much like these landmarks, is a balance of endings and beginnings. The Opera House and the Bridge aren’t just static symbols – they embody movement, transformation, and connection – all of which this tour has brought to life for so many of us. The Opera House’s stages are never truly silent; they wait for the next act, just as the Bridge carries endless footsteps forward.

Soon, we’ll cross another threshold, embarking on the next stage of our cycling odyssey. But no matter where the road takes us, Sydney will remain a poignant reminder: every ending is a beginning, and every bridge leads to new horizons.
