South Africa

A long time ago, I had a ten minute conversation on the beach with Steve who had been on a TDA tour through Africa. I didn’t know it then but it planted a thought in my head that would soon change the course of my life.

It seemed that everything I had done before had in some way prepared me for this. A life in hospitality and a few years at sea - from some grand establishments to some very inhospitable vessels and anything in-between.

There were a variety of less stimulating occupations I had explored before I landed at TDA. I think this is what has kept me here for so long, the almost overwhelming stimulation that one gets from daily life on tour, which is miles apart from my quiet country life in South Africa.

That, and the other people. There is always such a variety of people from all walks of life and from all over the world that I would otherwise not have met.

I am an adventurous person, who enjoys the outdoors and the challenges that life brings me when I step out of my comfort zone. As a physician, I have worked in sports medicine and my teachers always told me about the enormous contribution that cycling made to physiology and nutrition in general. Besides, I like to read and spend time playing music (I have my Ukelele always ready).

I am a retired enterprise software product guy working on my biking, skiing and travel backlog. I am 59 years old, live in Vancouver, Canada and am married with daughter in university. Biking wise, I regularly ride road, gravel and mountain with gravel and mountain biking being my mainstays. I have ridden multiple 10+ day self supported gravel bikepacking trips but never a longer supported ride such as this one. I have travelled widely on business and vacations but in Africa only a little - Morocco, Tunisia and Kenya - so am looking forward to learning and seeing a lot more. Currently, I am planning to be on the first two stages and am keen to be riding with all the other travellers.

What have I signed up for!!! I must admit my main sporting passion is ocean swimming, it doesn't sound like there'll be much of that on offer! We, that is myself, & Nick (husband, also on the tour) got a taste for cycle touring on a recent trip to Costa Rica - Challenging, yes, rewarding, absolutely. Not too sure how this long distance cycle touring will go, however, always looking for the next challenge, so will give it my best shot.

I live in Perth Western Australia, married to Johanna (Jo) who is also on the Trip. I am reasonably active enjoying outdoor activities, ocean swimming, windsurfing, snowboarding and of course riding. I ride a hard tail mountain bike in preference to a standard road bike even when commuting, makes me work harder chasing guys on road bikes. The longest bike trip I have done was in 2015 when we completed the Epic South America Trip. Since then we have ridden from Manali to Leh through the high mountain passes of Ladakh. Since returning from South America I have competed in several long distance offroad endurance rides and enjoy the physical and mental challenges.

I have ridden four different Alp tours in France and Italy including a Grand Tour of the Alps and multiple one week tours in the USA. Currently Professor and Interim Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky but am entering phased retirement in July 2021. I ride a Kona Sutra with panniers on unsupported trips. Really enjoy the friendship and camaraderie that develop on bicycle trips like this one. Plan to do section 2 and 3 of the TDA Bamboo road.

TDA Global has been on my radar for many years and I finally decided to put it on the calendar - I'll be 67 years young for the tour in 2024 so its time to get on it. My home is in Houston, Tx but I also move around to Louisiana and other locations to have diversity in my riding locations.

When we travel, we open up, we learn, we absorb and we get amazed by the different sights, landscapes and the people we meet. This is what I am continue to look for on my second long distance bike tour. Hopefully I am able to complete the North to South journey of the Americas. From the Arctic Ocean to the Straight of Magellan. I am of Dutch nationality but feel more like a cosmopolitan as I lived the majority of my professional career abroad. I have realised cycling holidays let you see and experience so much more - and you can eat porridge every day and not feel guilty for all those carbs! Sign me up. I have cycled sections of Ruta Maya, Tour D'Afrique, and the last section of West Africa in 2018. Let's hope there is WIFI. I'm self employed so have to work outside of riding my bike. It's been done everywhere else so I am sure I'll be fine here too. Places I want to see before I die.. Iran, Mauritius and Alaska in no particular order. At least I’m close to Alaska I guess.

"It was my third tour with tda and I'm still as excited as I was on the first tour. The cyclists get exactly the level of support you need. I'm not in great shape and I had to struggle to do the distances. Many days were very hard. But you always drive with a safety net. And to cycle through the solitude of Namibia in this grandiose nature or to meet a herd of elephants on the roadside on long straight lonely stretches through the bush in Botswana, these are experiences for the whole life."

"I have done more than 50 multi stage events over the last 20 years. TdA tour was run the most professional of all these events. Clearly this organisation has figured out and mastered touring."

"Is there a better way of life? Living outdoors, cycling across some of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen, greeting locals in different languages and creeping up on exotic wildlife and domestic animals, camping in the wind, or rain or heat under the stars with the flysheet off, eating as much as I can... and sharing it all with very interesting, funny and supportive fellow riders as I arrive at camp high on endorphins."

Full tour and section dates listed are for first and last day of cycling. Prices based on double occupancy at majority of the hotels. Solo riders will be paired with another rider of the same gender at no additional charge. Accommodation the night before first cycling day and the night of last cycling day are included in entry fee. We advise booking at least 1 additional night at tour accommodation before the tour, to be able to attend rider briefing and have assistance from tour bike mechanic in setting up your bike.

Full entry fee payment is due 90 days before the tour start date. A registration fee of US$150 must first be paid to hold your place on the tour and is in addition to the entry fee listed above. Registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. We recommend registering 4 - 6 months before the tour start date to take full advantage of our pre-tour support and information bulletins, but late registrations are possible when spaces are still available.

Full tour entry fees will receive an early payment discount of US$300 if full payment is received 6 months before the start of the tour. Those coming for multiple sections get 10% off for 2 or more sections on the same tour (multiple section discount does not apply to full tour price). TDA alumni get special alumni discounts. Please contact our office for further details.
