Cycling Paradise in Ethiopia

Imagine a perfect cycling day… Sunny skies, warm temperatures, we follow a snaking ribbon of smooth pavement that twists, turns and undulates across a fascination, breathtakingly beautiful countryside. Golden fields are filled with cows, sheep and grazing horses. There are meandering streams, acres of seneic farmland and small villages filled with enthusiastic, cheering onlookers as you ride by.

Lightning fast descents with hairpin turns, challenging ascents, ever changing scenery over each hill… cycling paradise to be sure… No, it’s not the European countryside, although several racers commented that it reminded them of a German countryside. This is cycling in Ethiopia. Beautiful, challenging, fantastic…who knew?

These are the words of Ironman Chris Wille, one of our racers, an eternal optimist, always enthusiastic about the topography and the ride. If you were to ask a few of the other riders of what they thought about today, you might have a more varied response Tonight we camp in a shaded, semiprivate tree farm. Spirits are high and people are ready for a magnificent ride tomorrow through the Blue Nile Gorge.
