Impressions

What are the most interesting things you’ve seen along the road?

Mel: On the hillside in The Gorge, there was a beautiful man with glistening, wet black skin showering beneath a waterfall—stark naked.

Bernie: The cows thrashing the grain. It’s very neat because we used to work at the grain. We actually have an old thrasher.

Rae: The foosball tables in Ethiopian towns and the women winnowing the grain.

Jamie: These old women, bent over, on bare feet, carrying who knows how many pounds of water. Bare feet! And no plastic bags.

Natalia: A dead cow, definitely dead, twice the size of a normal cow, about to explode, with the butt half-way on the road.

Bernd: The landscape itself and how the people are living. The Gorge.

Bent: The people in the small towns…the number of people you have to cycle through. To speak to the children while they run maybe a kilometer with you. And of course, the sunset over the Gorge, very positive, beautiful.

Bruno: The women mixing cow manure and making cow pies, with hay. Astonishing, a shock! I understand they don’t want to waste anything, but really a shock.

Harrison: The landscape. I was surprised by the number of trees in Ethiopia.
