“New Zealand is a country of such stunning beauty, where the landscape changes every 10 minutes, and it’s just one of those places where you don’t have to look too far to be inspired.” – Peter Jackson

Cycling across a foreign country on an expedition tour is no small feat. Unpredictable weather, challenging road conditions, and a new cultural environment can make the journey an adventure. This stretch across New Zealand’s North Island came with stories of steep, narrow roads, unpredictable conditions, and breathtaking views. Now, as we ferry across the Cook Strait to the South Island, the striking landscapes and challenges of the ride have left riders reflecting on the highs and lows of their journey.

The landscapes in the north are dramatic and in the past 13 days we’ve experienced an abundance of diversity. From snowy mountain peaks to idyllic green hills scattered with sheep, each day is unique. One rider, Kristen, captured it perfectly: “The greens are so green, and there seems to be almost no flat place—so many slopes and cones and weird topographic features.

The terrain feels alive, shaped by geothermal activity, steaming vents, and bubbling mud pools. From quaint farm homesteads to towering mountains on the horizon, each turn in the road reveals something more striking than the last, underscoring why New Zealand’s natural beauty is so revered. When asked about his experience, rider Grant said: “I’ve found the ‘living landscape’ fascinating: cycling down the geothermal spine has been fun, from the slurping mud pools to the volcanic hills and sweeping rivers.

This stretch has not been without its challenges. Narrow roads, strong winds, and steep climbs tested the riders’ endurance. As rider John noted, “The first few days had some tough climbs, but the scenery and good weather made each day a joy.” The infamous rail trails, with gradients as steep as 6.5%, offered an extra challenge, prompting another rider, Keith, to joke, “It reminded me why it’s called a push bike.

Many cyclists also remarked on the lack of rain, given New Zealand’s reputation for unpredictable weather. Clear skies and lush greenery combined with dramatic topography to create unforgettable views. Rider John also observed, “The vegetation unique to this part of the world has been a highlight. The quieter routes have often been the most stunning.” The vibrant birdlife, including some of the world’s most unique seabirds, added to the magic of the journey.

Our ride across the North Island has been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with stunning scenery, cultural connections, and shared moments of camaraderie. As we head towards the South Island’s towering peaks and pristine fjords, we carry with us the lessons and memories from these first two weeks, noting that New Zealand isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you. As Grant aptly concluded, “The land of the long white cloud indeed.
