Carnival

The Experience

Carnival in Rio is one of those iconic world events that everyone should experience once in their lifetime – a whirlwind of colours, sounds and tastes. We asked ourselves what the best way to get there would be? Of course, the answer was obvious – on a bicycle.

Join us for an incredible month long ride to Carnival in Rio along Northeast Brazil’s stunning, sun-drenched coast. The ride begins in vibrant Recife at Marco Zero, the very spot where the Portuguese founded the city in 1537. From there the cyclists will spin south along seemingly endless beaches, past shifting sand dunes and through small, charming fishing villages. A rest day in historic Salvador will allow the riders to explore the city’s amazing cultural mosaic and unmatched colonial architecture. They will also notice the city’s intensive preparations for its own Carnival celebrations, a hint of what to expect in Rio. Spinning south the cyclists will experience the unique rainforest beaches around Itacare before pedalling along the beach into Porto Seguro and the mid-point of this adventure.

After a rest day spent enjoying the sweeping views from the Cidade Historica, the riders will head out along the beach, the waves gently washing up against their wheels. This part of the Brazilian coast was known as the Discovery Coast, since the Portuguese convoys that first approached Brazil in this area were unable to land nearby because of all the rocks, corals and other marine hazards. Fortunately the only obstacles our cyclists will face are choosing between fresh fish or Feijoada (the national meat dish), icy cold beer or refreshing caipirinhas. And each night a comfortable hotel awaits. As the riders draw closer to the finish line, the rhythm of Carnival will grow louder and louder until the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvellous City) appears and the real celebration begins.
